Motor Vehicle Fire Investigation - 2 Day
"This motor vehicle fire investigation class presented by the IAAI has been fantastic. The instructors were professional and provided multiple real-world examples of recent fires and investigations that offer modern training for today’s fire investigators.
Vehicle fires are not structure fires, and the significant differences in fuel loads, fire dynamics, and investigator safety are all addressed in accordance with the most current NFPA guidance. Classroom discussion was encouraged, and the lesson plans were detailed yet concise, providing a valuable flow of activities and instruction.
I would absolutely recommend that all fire investigators attend this valuable training."

Fundamentals of Fire Investigation

"I am a 30-year veteran of the Indianapolis Fire Department and have recently begun my journey into fire investigations. I found the class to be very informative and the instructors to be highly knowledgeable. Although this was not my first class in fire investigations, the information presented enhanced my understanding of the principles discussed.
The instructors taught the material in a clear and accessible way, which further strengthened my comprehension. I believe I will be able to apply this information directly to my methods, immediately improving my results."

 — Captain Joseph Schenk – Indianapolis Fire Department, Fire Investigation Unit

Electrical Aspects of Fire Investigation
"I found the course to be highly valuable and directly applicable to real-world fire investigation work. The in-depth coverage of electrical failure modes, arc mapping, and the systematic examination of electrical components significantly enhanced my technical understanding and confidence when evaluating potential electrical ignition sources. The balance between theory, practical examples, and case-based discussions made the material clear and engaging.
This training has strengthened my investigative approach by improving my ability to identify, document, and analyze electrical evidence in a structured and defensible manner. I believe the knowledge gained will positively impact the accuracy and quality of my future fire investigations."

Commercial Kitchen Fires: A Practical Approach to Systems Design, Evaluation, and Documentation with an Eye Toward Claims and Litigation
"I thought the class was good, and the instructors were passionate and knowledgeable. I honestly learned a lot about the systems and legal aspects, which is something I had not been exposed to before. It was valuable information and something I will keep in mind when responding, reporting, and completing our investigations, as well as what not to disturb."

ATF-IAAI Complex Fire Investigation Strategies for Insurance Claim Professionals

"Thank you for all that you have done to develop and sustain this program. As a public sector investigator, I found the class to be eye-opening. It was well-organized, highly relevant, and grounded in real-world application. The practical exercise highlighted the importance of teamwork, cooperation, communication, and patience—skills essential to any investigative effort.
I especially appreciated the blend of traditional, methodical investigative techniques with modern technology. AI is an incredible tool, but without a strong foundation in the basics, its value cannot be completely unlocked. The instructors did a phenomenal job of laying that foundation, and I'm grateful for the depth of knowledge and experience they brought to the course.
I enjoyed gaining a different perspective of the industry and have already used the material covered in class at work. Thank you for keeping this class going."

 — Lieutenant Michael Nelson – Baltimore City Fire Department

Motor Vehicle Fire Investigation 3-Day
"I found this course to be very thorough in its coverage of the material, thanks in large part to the depth of knowledge and expertise of the presenters.
The format of the class was also effective: two days of classroom instruction is not overbearing, and one day of fieldwork with a short presentation on the findings provides good preparation for real fires and a better opportunity to practice for potential courtroom testimony. The course was also well suited for both public and private investigators, with analogies and responsibilities identified for each.
The team exercise at the end was particularly instructive because not all jurisdictions have multiple investigators on a scene due to staffing and other operational limitations. It encouraged us to communicate effectively, identify strengths that would advance our goals efficiently, and share our experiences and resources."

 — Spencer Baumgartner, Fire Investigator II – KCSO Criminal Investigations Division, Fire Investigation Unit

Electrical Aspects of Fire Investigation
"I would like to thank the IAAI for delivering such a great training course. The Electrical Aspects of Fire Investigation course significantly improved my understanding of electrical components and potential issues I may not have recognized without this training.
Mr. Custer, the instructor, is an excellent fit for the course. His knowledge and experience truly shine through and helped expand my understanding of electrical components and safety considerations on fire scenes."

 — Matthew Jones – Gaffney Fire Department

Fundamentals of Fire Investigation

"Completing the IAAI Fundamentals of Fire Investigation course was a turning point in my professional development as a fire investigator. The program delivers exactly what our field demands—clear, evidence-based methodology grounded in NFPA 921 and the scientific method. What stood out most was how effectively the course bridges foundational theory with real-world investigative application.
The instructors bring deep experience and present the material in a way that builds confidence, sharpens critical thinking, and reinforces the disciplined approach required for origin and cause determination. From fire dynamics to scene documentation, evidence handling, and hypothesis testing, every module strengthened my ability to conduct thorough, objective, and defensible investigations. The instructors also provide detailed explanations using real-world experiences.
Whether you’re new to fire investigation or looking to reinforce your investigative framework, the IAAI FFI course sets a high standard. It provides the tools, structure, and mindset needed to perform high-quality investigations and contribute meaningfully to the pursuit of truth and public safety.
