Course Overview
This advanced-level training course is designed for experienced fire investigators preparing to serve as a Fire Investigation Safety Officer or take on safety leadership roles at large or complex post-fire scenes. Whether functioning as a dedicated safety officer or in a dual-role capacity, students will be trained in safety management, risk assessment, and incident command systems specific to fire investigation scenes.


The course features up-to-date safety protocols from multiple authoritative sources and includes integration of FEMA ICS Safety Officer content.

The Role of the Fire Investigation Safety Officer: Before, During, and After the Investigation
Hazards and Risk Assessment
Post-Fire Scene Health Hazards
Building Systems and Construction Considerations
Safety Hazards, Prevention Methods, and Procedures
Responding to Damaged Structures
Post-Incident Safety Responsibilities
The course concludes with a final group activity: a written safety assessment and an oral presentation.


Prerequisites
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Experience:
At least 3 years of fire scene examination experience

Training:
Completion of a 40-hour tested basic fire investigation course

Fire Investigator Scene Safety
Site Safety Assessment
ICS/NIMS Courses:
ICS 100, 200, and one of the following: ICS 300, ICS 400, IS-700, or IS-800
(Courses available online at FEMA NIMS Training)

Recommended:
Hazmat Operations or HAZWOPER training

Note: Students are required to bring a laptop or tablet for course activities.
