The International Association of Arson Investigators (“IAAI”) and Paul Davis Restoration (PDR) present “Fire Investigation for Insurance Claims Professionals,” an intensive eight-hour seminar designed specifically for insurance claims professionals, including field and desk adjusters, claims supervisors and managers, underwriting personnel, and subrogation and liability claims professionals. Scheduled for Thursday, October 22, 2026, at Paul Davis Restoration of Utah in Centerville, this course bridges fundamental fire science with the practical evaluation and handling of fire-related insurance claims by the application of the scientific method and the guidelines and standards of care applicable to public and private sector fire and explosion origin and cause investigators, including National Fire Protection Association (“NFPA”) 1033, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator, NFPA 1321, Standard for the Fire Investigation Units, and NFPA 921, Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations. Attendees will learn essential fire investigation terminology and explore how building construction, materials, occupancies, and combustible contents influence fire risk, fire growth, and overall loss severity and why those considerations matter when investigating, evaluating, and adjusting a fire loss.
 
The course provides insurance claims professionals with a practical understanding of how fire investigators apply the scientific method to gather data, test hypotheses, develop supportable conclusions, and properly classify the fire’s origin and cause. Instructors will guide participants on how to critically evaluate origin-and-cause reports, analyze investigative data, ask informed questions of retained fire investigators and other experts, and evaluate claims when the fire's origin or cause remains undetermined. Additionally, the course addresses practical claims-handling considerations, helping professionals identify potential subrogation opportunities, make liability risk assessments, recognize indicators of incendiary activity or potential fraud, and make informed decisions regarding scene and evidence preservation.
 
A central highlight of the course is a series of live burn cell demonstrations conducted by experienced fire and explosion investigation professionals. Participants will observe real-time fire dynamics, fire temperatures, ventilation effects, and suppression across multiple scenarios. By examining conditions before and after each burn, attendees will compare physical evidence, evaluate the impact of automatic sprinkler systems, and apply their observations to practical insurance-claim considerations, including origin-and-cause evaluation, loss assessment, scene and evidence preservation, subrogation, underwriting, and claims decision-making.

Cancellations received 31 days or more prior to the course start date are eligible for a full refund of the registration fee.

Cancellations received within 30 days of the course start date are non-refundable.

Registrants who are unable to attend may, at the discretion of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), substitute another eligible individual from the same organization, provided written notice is received prior to the course start date.

Failure to attend a course without prior written cancellation (no-shows) will not be eligible for a refund.

All IAAI courses are subject to cancellation or postponement at any time due to unforeseen circumstances. Registered participants will be notified as soon as possible.
