Evidence Essentials - December 9, 2026




This foundational course provides comprehensive instruction on identifying, preserving, and collecting evidence at fire and arson scenes. Participants will gain knowledge of proper techniques, tools, and protocols that ensure evidence is collected systematically and maintained in a manner that upholds its integrity and reliability throughout the investigative process.
Through a combination of lectures and practical discussions, students will explore common types of physical evidence encountered during fire investigations, learn strategies to minimize contamination or loss, and understand documentation practices that support continuity and accuracy in casework. Emphasis is placed on reinforcing professional standards applicable across a variety of investigative environments.




Evidence Collection Practicum (ECT) - December 10-11, 2026


The Evidence Collection Technician (ECT) program is designed to verify an applicant's fundamental knowledge and practical skills in evidence collection at fire scenes. The evaluation is based on established professional qualification standards and industry best practices. This program provides the foundation for assessing an individual's competency in performing specific evidence collection tasks in accordance with accepted practices.


Applicants must meet eligibility requirements in experience, education, and training, and successfully complete a comprehensive practical examination.

CFITrainer.net-NFPA 1033 and Your Career (2 hours) 


CFITrainer.net-Physical Evidence at the Fire Scene (4 hours) 


CFITrainer.net-The Practical Application of the Relationship Between NFPA 1033 and NFPA 921 (2 hours) 


CFITrainer.net-The Scientific Method for Fire and Explosion Investigation (3 hours)


Total Hours Must Reach a Minimum of 29 Hours.
Note: Completion of these modules is a prerequisite. Course and exam content will reference all listed materials.


Comprehensive Practical Examination
- Examination Duration: 4 Hours
- Structure: 10 practical components
- Passing Requirements:
  • All critical elements must be passed
  • Minimum 70% score required on each component


Certification & Renewal
Successful candidates will be awarded ECT certification.
Renewal is required every five years.


Application & Registration


Applicants for this professional designation shall submit reference letters from their employers confirming an understanding of core job performance requirements (JPRs) outlined in established professional qualifications standards and standard industry practices related to evidence collection demonstrated at fire scenes in the preceding 18 months.
