Course Overview


Marine Fire Investigation is an intensive 3½-day training program focused on the investigation of fires aboard marine vessels. Developed through a collaboration between the IAAI and the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), this course features instruction from IAAI facilitators, marine surveyors, engineers, and seasoned special investigators.


Topics include:

Marine fire scene safety

Hot surface ignition and explosions

Electrical systems and vessel terminology

Data collection and interviews

Legal considerations and evidence handling

Methodology, scientific method, and report writing

The course culminates with a hands-on team investigation of a pre-burnt vessel, followed by the preparation and presentation of a preliminary report.

Student Expectations

Upon successful completion, students will gain:

Proficiency in marine vessel terminology

An understanding of marine electrical and propulsion systems

Practical, safe approaches to marine fire scene investigation

Start: Monday, May 17 at 8:00 AM

Dismissal: Thursday, May 20 at 3:00 PM

Total Instruction Time: 30 hours

The Scientific Method for Fire and Explosion Investigation

The Practical Application of the Relationship Between NFPA 1033 and NFPA 921

Preparation for the Marine Fire Scene


Course content and examination will reference all prerequisite materials.


Cancellation and Refund Policy

Cancellations received 31 days or more prior to the course start date are eligible for a full refund of the registration fee.

Cancellations received within 30 days of the course start date are non-refundable.

Registrants who are unable to attend may, at the discretion of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), substitute another eligible individual from the same organization, provided written notice is received prior to the course start date.

Failure to attend a course without prior written cancellation (no-shows) will not be eligible for a refund.
