The NC Chapter of IAAI hosts an Expert Witness Courtroom Testimony Class

The NCIAAI Officers, Board of Directors, and Training Committee is pleased to announce that the IAAI Expert Witness Courtroom Testimony Course will be held on November 19, 20, & 21 in Brevard NC at the Transylvania County Public Safety Facility located at 155 Public Safety Way in Brevard NC 28712. 

Qualified candidates shall have a minimum of 3 years of fire investigations experience and meet all current prerequisites for IAAI-CFI certification with exception of courtroom testimony. Completed applications should be forward Donel Braxton at dbraxton@ara-i.com no later than the close of business on Wednesday October 1, 2025. 

The IAAI permits a maximum of 8 students in each course. Applications are accepted on a first come basis, and will be thoroughly vetted to determine the applicant's eligibility to participate. The Expert Witness Courtroom Testimony course walks you through what it’s like to prepare for and testify as an expert witness in a real case. During the class, you will spend time with actual attorneys giving your deposition, preparing for your testimony, as well as spending the day in a real courtroom environment where you will take the stand for direct and cross-examination.
The classroom portion includes Legal System Overview; Court Rules and Case Law; Qualifying as an Expert and Standing by Your Curriculum Vitae; and How to Write and Present Your Opinion Analysis.


The court preparation portion includes The Practical Exercise; Court Exhibits: How to Present and what should be Included; Presentation of Evidence: Best Practices; and Working with an Attorney.
This course meets the testimony requirement for IAAI-CFI® (IAAI-Certified Fire Investigator) application.
Class Fee: $500.00 


Prerequisites:
Work Experience: Candidate must be employed in a position that requires them to conduct fire investigation in accordance with NFPA 1033. Candidate shall have a minimum of 3 years' experience and working to complete the required training and education to apply for their IAAI-CFI.
Able to meet all the requirements of the IAAI-CFI® application except for the expert witness testimony requirement and employment time.

The course requires more than 40 hours of preliminary casework, for which you have six weeks to prepare and submit. Students will be required to update (or create) their Curriculum Vitae (CV), develop an opinion analysis and court testimony plan, and create two courtroom exhibits.
