Evidence Collection

This foundational course provides comprehensive instruction on the identification, preservation, and collection of evidence at fire and arson scenes. Participants will gain knowledge of proper techniques, tools, and protocols that ensure evidence is collected systematically and maintained in a manner that upholds its integrity and reliability throughout the investigative process.

Through a combination of lecture and practical discussion, students will explore common types of physical evidence encountered during fire investigations, learn strategies to minimize contamination or loss, and understand documentation practices that support continuity and accuracy in casework. Emphasis is placed on reinforcing professional standards that can be applied across a variety of investigative environments.

This course is designed for fire investigators, law enforcement personnel, and other professionals who may be responsible for handling evidence in the field. It is also an excellent preparatory step for those intending to pursue the IAAI Evidence Collection Technician (ECT) Practicum.
