Fire Dynamics for Fire Investigators
UL FSRI, IAAI and the New Jersey Chapter of the IAAI in cooperation with the Middlesex County (NJ) Fire Academy are offering a one day fire dynamics course for fire investigators.
Within the past decade, UL FSRI has conducted research that improved the understanding of fires within structures. As a result of changes in building construction and the types of fuels in home furnishings, the lessons on fire behavior based solely on four stages of fire (ignition, growth, fully developed and decay) may not apply. UL FSRI has developed a program designed to enhance the understanding of fire dynamics and how to apply that knowledge at the fire scene. The day long program focuses on the “how” and “why” of fire dynamics. The attendees will be conducting small table top fire experiments to better understand the fire triangle, heat transfer, and heat release rate. Reduced scale fire models along with videos and data from full scale fire experiments will be used to demonstrate ventilation-limited fires and flow paths.
Attendees will leave with an improved understanding of fire dynamics and a digital tool kit, including the presentation and guides to conducting the experiments to support their training efforts at home. This course is appropriate for all fire investigators, but it could be especially useful to fire investigation instructors.
