SC Chapter 2nd Quarter Training 2019

The S.C. Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators (SCIAAI) is proud to announce the 2nd Quarter training program on From Fire Scene to Courtroom. Our presenter will be Teresa Postell , an Assistant Attorney General, with the North Carolina Department of Justice. Mrs. Postell works in Criminal Appellate Section which handles the most difficult and complex criminal appeals in North Carolina. She began her legal career as a Prosecutor in the capital city of Raleigh, North Carolina, in 2000, where she was the Juvenile Multi-Disciplinary Child Sex Prosecutor and was the District Attorney’s Office Liaison with the State’s Mental Health Hospital. In 2007, Mrs. Postell was asked to join the Harnett County District Attorney’s Office where she became the dedicated Arson and Sex Offense Prosecutor. While in Harnett County, Mrs. Postell also handled all Harnett County Homicides with her Senior Assistant. Upon accepting the position with North Carolina Department of Justice in 2012, Mrs. Postell was granted her request to handle most Criminal Fire Related Appeals in addition to her regular assignments involving high level felonies including Homicides and Child Sex Offenses. Mrs. Postell represents the government by handling criminal cases in the United States Supreme Court, the North Carolina Supreme Court, and the North Carolina Court of Appeals, and because of her expertise she has also assisted the Special Prosecution Section in trial proceedings in Superior Court. Mrs. Postell is a resource for prosecutors, law enforcement officers, and others during the response, investigation, trial preparation and appellate phase of criminal case. Mrs. Postell teaches and lectures locally, statewide and nationally. In addition, Mrs. Postell has been recognized as an expert in the area of Arson Prosecution.

This course will provide multi-disciplinary interactive training to all individuals both public and private that may be involved in the ramifications of fire that maybe the result of accidental or intentional acts in an effort to reduce the number of such fires and the damagers they cause. In addition, the class will provide training that increases cooperation between individuals and agencies as a team thereby increasing understanding of the responsibilities of others and making more efficient use of the various resources available. Lastly, the course will provide updated understanding of the legal aspects of fire cases from the moment the fire begins through cases resolution so that people who are civilly or criminally responsible are held accountable thereby reducing the occurrence of preventable fires and fire loss.

This training is scheduled for a minimum of 8 contact hours. Testing options will be discussed at the training event. Member attendance will be Free and non-member attendance fee is $50. The Chapter business meetings for SCIAAI will be held immediately following lunch on March 7, 2019. Lunch is on your own. The SC Fire Academy serves a buffet lunch. The cost of the lunch is $7 per day. Please advise if you wish to eat the buffet so enough food will be prepared. Some dorm rooms may be available at the SCFA. Pre-registration is required: Register online for this class at www.sciaai.org. Students have the option to pay for this class via PayPal when registering online. You may also pay by credit card/check/cash on the day of the event, or mail a check to SCIAAI Training Registration, PO Box 212486, Columbia, S.C. 29221-2486. The cutoff date for registration is Monday, March 4, 2019. Non-member attendance must be pre-approved by the SCIAAI Board. Pending applicants pay “member fee” to attend.
