He specializes in appliance failures and product testing / analysis and has completed Honeywell, Whirlpool, Maycor and National Propane Association factory training.

Electrical Fire Causations
You can argue that electrical fire are primarily caused by three factors: too much current, too much resistance in the wrong place, too much (and sometimes too little) voltage. But it is important to realize the vast majority of electrically caused fires (outside of appliances) can’t be determined simply by looking at the physical evidence. Location, location, location or maybe we should say origin, origin, origin coupled with physical evidence is the key.

Zack McCune
Zach is an attorney and Partner in Rolfes Henry’s Cincinnati office. His practice primarily involves counseling and representing insurance companies of all sizes in fire science litigation, complex fraud and coverage investigations, and bad faith litigation.   Zach’s extensive fire science experience includes fire and explosion causation investigations, prosecution, and defense of Daubert expert witness challenges, catastrophic burn litigation, and complex arson investigations.

Zach serves as a lead firm and industry source for implementing technological and forensic advancements into fraud and coverage investigations, with a particular focus on computer and cellular telephone technology.  Zach is one of a limited number of attorneys nationwide to receive a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator designation from the National Association of Fire Investigators.

Case Study in Framing and Fraud: How Spoofing and Masking Technologies Were Used to Frame an Innocent Mother and Perpetuate an Arson Fraud
The presentation focuses on an unique arson fire in the Cincinnati area where an unprecedented level of spoofing and masking technologies were used by an insured to frame the mother of his child, such that she would be thrown in jail for 20+ years and he would escape town with an approximate $500,000 insurance recovery.  The presentation touches upon new technologies available to fraudsters, including custom made, wearable masks from facial recognition technology, the use of SpoofCard and spoofing-type programs to conceal communications and frame others for communications they never participated in, the use of fake Google and Facebook profiles to commit crimes and communicate undetected with co-conspirators – and how to identify and discover these materials in arson investigations.

June 16, 2021 1pm – 5pm
Dr. John DeHaan
Dr. DeHaan has over 49 years experience in fire- and explosion-related forensic science.  After earning his BS (Physics, UICC, 1969), he spent 29 years with county, State, and Federal forensic labs. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Pure & Applied Chemistry – Forensic Science in 1995. He has authored six editions of Kirk’s Fire Investigation since 1982 and was co-author of Forensic Fire Scene Reconstruction 2004-2012. From 1999 to 2017 he was president of Fire-Ex Forensics, Inc., a private consultancy.

What’s My Fuel and What’s My Ignition Source?
One of the most critical fundamental determinations every fire investigator has to make is the
identification of the first fuel ignited and determination of the ignition source. One has to consider low energy ignition sources (like low-wattage electric lamps, electronic devices, batteries, smoldering cigarettes, hot surfaces, and hot particles). First fuels can vary enormously in their physical and chemical properties and susceptibility to such weak ignition sources. Is that fuel cellulosic, synthetic, thermo setting or thermoplastic solid? How will it react to a modest heat source nearby or in contact? This presentation will present simple visual and tactile observations, aided by simple field ignition tests, that combined, can make it possible to classify a wide variety of common fuels (upholstery, fabrics, dusts, and some ignitable liquids) to enable accurate determination of the ignition potential by various heat sources.
