The Hartford Insurance - SIU Fire Investigator

This position reports to the SIU National Manager holding oversight of the National Fire Investigative Program. This SIU Fire Investigator position is responsible for working with Origin and Cause vendors to ensure quality and consistency while partnering with Hartford Property, General Liability, Legal, Risk Engineering and Claim Recovery Operations members. This position is responsible for identifying opportunities for claim liability defense, property subrogation opportunities and identifying any potential underwriting/coverage concerns. This individual is also responsible for program development & tactical execution of The Hartford’s SIU Fire Investigative efforts, working with multiple business groups to develop and enhance fire investigative workflows, identify specialized needs & recruitment paths including top talent and certified fire investigators, specialized vendor networks, specialized panel counsel firms, and other technical experts to enhance the scope of the program. The position will also work in conjunction with the SIU Field Organization, SIU Forensic Data Analytics Operation, Corporate Legal, and other related business areas.

This position requires a high level of knowledge in the technical area of Fire Origin and Cause Investigations, NFPA 921, Chain of Custody and Evidence Standards, Criminal & Civil Prosecution Processes, State Fraud Regulatory Compliance & Fraud Reporting. This Investigator should also be familiar with:
  • Scientific Method for Fire and Explosion Investigations
  • Evidence retention and Spoliation issues
  • Codes and regulations and how they relate to an insurance investigation
  • Classification of fires
  • Elements of a fire investigation and the impact of the arson triangle
  • Procedures to engage vendor management
  • Negative Corpus and its relationship to fire investigation
  • Consideration given to IAAI and CFI training

In addition, this role requires the abilities to be highly flexible, committed & engaged, while having exceptional time management skills and proactive execution abilities to balance multiple priorities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position will be responsible for working with O&C fire investigators/leaders, subrogation counsel/leaders and claim leaders on a regular basis. The position is also charged with routine travel to The Hartford’s business & customer locations on a national level to support relationship building, organization collaboration, identify improvement opportunities, and to assist in building the SIU National Fire Program. This position will be responsible for the continued identification of workflow inefficiencies, current & future vulnerabilities fraud schemes, and must function with a continuous improvement mindset. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Ensure collaboration & maintain relationships with all Business Partners while marketing SIU services and educate center personnel as to value proposition of SIU
  • Interface with SIU Community and Law Enforcement: Participate in industry meetings and is aware of developments and emerging trends related to insurance fraud schemes nationally. The position must be able to liaison with industry peers and leaders and where necessary, interface with law enforcement per prescribed jurisdictional requirements and must be able to recognize opportunities to leverage information to appropriate personnel within The Hartford
  • Understand the legal & regulatory environments on a national level
  • Be highly knowledgeable in areas of appropriate investigative techniques & strategies pertaining to Fire Origin & Cause Investigations, NFPA 921, Organized fraud schemes, Laws pertaining to Insurance Claims, mandated reporting, good-faith investigative techniques and understanding of emerging issues impacting Property & Casualty and Group Benefits claims
  • Fully comply with statutory, regulatory and ethics requirements

  • Effectively train, coach and develop staff to enable optimal job performance and the achievement of individual and professional goals
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum of 5 years of SIU /Insurance Fraud/Fire investigative background with proven track record
  • Highly knowledgeable of Fire Investigations, NFPA 921, Fire Suppression, Fire Scene Incident Command
  • Experience with Large Scale Organized Fraud Investigations
  • Experience with litigation strategies and Anti-Fraud Deterrence methods
  • Strong Project Management Skills
  • Very Strong Communication skills: written, oral, presentation.
  • Experience in training, both formal & informal.
