State Auto-Origin and Cause Fire Investigator

As an Origin & Cause Fire Investigator you should possess a strong functional and technical knowledge in your designated area. You need to be versatile as new challenges and technologies are routinely presented in addition to daily responsibilities. You will also be expected to take on new assignments, develop new skills, and assist in other areas as necessary.
Job Description: Assigned to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) maintaining primary responsibility for conducting on-scene fire investigations and determining the origin and cause of all types of fires. Maintaining proficiency and expertise in fire dynamics and origin and cause determinations as further outlined in NFPA 921. Assists in the coordination and execution of multiple key initiatives within a group, and is expected to assist others in investigations. Participates effectively on team projects by collaborating, communicating and assisting others in identifying and resolving issues. As a member of the SIU team; Determines the origin and cause of the loss/claim under investigation and identifies any potential third-party responsibility for subrogation potential; The ability to secure the fire/explosion scene to prevent removal or damage of evidence; The ability to search for, identify, collect, and label any evidence of possible arson at the fire scene, including devices used to set, start, or further the progress of fire; and protect the chain of custody of evidence;  The ability to communicate effectively and act as a liaison between the insurance industry and law enforcement/fire service personnel;  The ability to clearly and effectively communicate the results of their investigation to the CARE representative; Identifies and interviews all witnesses or involved persons who may possess information or knowledge pertaining to incident under investigation: motive, opportunity or any other information or evidence that may assist in concluding a factual and complete investigation; Develops necessary knowledge and expertise required to conduct thorough inspection of available public records including land deeds, mortgages, liens, suits, judgments, marriage and divorce records, etc; Maintains up-to-date information regarding laws pertaining to rights of privacy and availability of public records to assure that all investigations are conducted in a completely legal and ethical manner; Prepares reports supporting the origin and cause determinations; Educates others on the processes and methodologies utilized in examining fire scenes and the determinations; Gathers and processes evidence and submits it for laboratory analysis utilizing proper chain of custody;  Provides expert testimony on fire scene processing/examination, origin and cause determinations and chain of custody of evidence.
